 Dr. Peter Lindquist
Lindquist’s research is focused on identifying the educational needs of translators, interpreters, and advanced language-learners through methodologies adapted from corpus-linguistics and discourse analysis. His dual-focus analytical model examines both the formal and functional aspects of mediated language to provide empirical evidence of performance patterns and their impact on translated text and interpreted discourse. Lindquist is President of the Society for the Study of Translation and Interpreting (SSTI) and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association (ATISA). His performance-assessment research has been published in North America, Europe, and Asia. Current research includes adapting his analytical model for use in translation and interpreting pedagogy and testing its efficacy as an instructional approach.

 Patricia Michelsen-King
Patricia Michelsen-King, originally from Colombia, has served as a consultant to judiciaries throughout the country on the development of foreign language interpretation services. She is Federally Certified and works as a freelance interpreter in Virginia federal courts as well as state courts Ms. Michelsen-King is a Master Test Specialist for the National Center for State Courts and worked on the development of the state consortium tests, as well as the federal oral and written exams. She has extensive experience in providing training for court interpreters and has been a featured speaker at state and national judicial conferences that educate judges and court system personnel on properly handling interpreted proceedings. She formerly served as the Chief Interpreter for the United States District Court, Southern District of New York where she supervised Spanish and other language interpreters, provided interpreter training and orientation, and dealt extensively with the courts, bar, public and the interpreter community on issues of concern. She has trained interpreters in 32 states. She works as a translator as well, and has transcribed tapes for over 37 trials, and been qualified as an expert witness more than 25 times in five states. She also does conference interpreting for corporations, and has interpreted for Janet Reno, Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsberg, and Sandra Day O’Connor among others. Ms. Michelsen-King earned her undergraduate degree in English literature and Secondary Education from Boston University, a dual Master's Degree in Education and Psychology from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and she has completed post-graduate work in advanced simultaneous interpretation techniques at Marymount Manhattan College. Presently she is a Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University teaching Interpretation and Translation courses, and developing the SETI program (Spanish English Translation and Interpretation Certificate in Richmond, Virginia.

 Robert Joe Lee
Mr. Lee was staff to the New Jersey Supreme Court Task Force on Interpreter and Translation Services (1982-1985) and managed the New Jersey Judiciary's program to ensure equal access to courts for linguistic minorities since that program began in December 1985 until he retired at the end of 2008. He has authored or edited over thirty government publications dealing with probation, court interpreting, minority concerns, and Hispanics and criminal justice. In collaboration with staff of the National Center for State Courts and colleagues in the state judiciaries of Minnesota, Oregon and Washington, he helped establish the State Court Interpreter Certification Consortium in 1995 and led New Jersey to be a charter member. He chaired the Consortium’s Technical Committee and served on its Executive Committee from the Consortium’s inception to Fall 2008.

 Katty Kauffman
Katty Kauffman is a Federally Certified Court Interpreter, member and Regional Secretary for South America of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), a member of the American Translators Association (ATA) and the National Association of Judicial Translators and Interpreters (NAJIT). She is also a graduate of Pedro de Valdivia University School of Law in Santiago, Chile where she currently resides. In addition to working in the freelance market where she has interpreted at two Summits of the Americas among other major international events-- Katty serves as translator, interpreter and consultant on interpreter qualification and selection policy to Office of the Public Prosecutor of Chile. Since the roll out of new criminal procedure in Chile, Katty has interpreted at numerous international conferences on comparative criminal procedural law and trained prosecutors, public defenders, law enforcement and judges in the use of interpreters in the courtroom. She has also put her skills to use at numerous trials and hearings under the new system in Chile.
In her free time, Katty enjoys figure skating and has served as a judge on Chile’s version of “Skating with Celebrities” on National Television (TVN).

Recent Reforms to Criminal Procedure in Latin America
While much has been written in Spanish, and to a certain extent in English, about the criminal procedure reforms sweeping Latin America, scant information is available that describes the novel process itself. During this session the speaker will provide a detailed review of one of the most successful such reforms in the region, the revamped system of criminal prosecution in Chile, and its sister reforms in Oaxaca and Chihuahua. Parallels will be drawn with the U.S. system. An extensive glossary will be provided. The three-hour session will be in English and Spanish. full description

 Emily Booth Varan
Emily Booth Varan is a Crime Laboratory Analyst for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Orlando as well as a speaker and instructor in forensic serology and DNA testing. Since 1998, she has been working criminal cases, testifying in Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Lake, Monroe, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, St. Johns and Volusia Counties. She has also served as a DNA auditor for the FDLE and on several committees for the training of new DNA analysts. She was the DNA Chair of the Joint Forensic Associations Meeting in 2004 and is currently Social Chair of the upcoming Joint Forensic Associations Meeting to be held in Orlando in late October 2009.

 Edward Hart
Deputy II Edward Hart began his law enforcement career in 1991 when he started working for Volusia County Corrections. In 1996 Deputy Hart became an adjunct faculty member of Daytona State College, and the Basic Law Enforcement program. Deputy Hart was lead instructor in Interpersonal Communications, and quickly obtained all high liability instructor certificates through the State of Florida, to include; Defensive Tactics, Firearms, and Emergency Vehicle Operations. Deputy Hart still maintains his adjunct status at Daytona State College teaching high liability topics through BLE and advanced training courses for sworn personnel. In addition Deputy Hart serves as an adjunct instructor for the Institute for Police Technology and Management at the University of N. Florida.
In 2003 Deputy Hart joined the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Hart was a road patrol Deputy until 2005 when he was offered a position within the agency’s training section. Deputy Hart remains in training with the title of Defensive Tactics/Less Lethal Coordinator; however, Deputy Hart is very active in the field training and evaluation phase for new hires. During these phases Deputy Hart is lead radar/laser certification instructor.
Deputy Hart became a member of the Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. Team in 2007. Deputy Hart’s current S.W.A.T. position is a less lethal operator and grenadier. Deputy Hart is responsible for teaching and certifying S.W.A.T. team members in the topics of OC Aerosol Projectors, Specialty Impact Munitions, Distraction Devices, and Chemical Munitions.
Deputy Hart has numerous, active advanced instructor certifications, to include; ASP Tactical Baton, Master Taser, Active Shooter Response, and Department of Homeland Security WMD Awareness. All of which are exercised throughout every year.
Overall Deputy Hart has 171/2 years experience with Volusia County Government, and has spent most of his career in the training arena. Deputy Hart continues his education through Daytona State College.

 Agustin S. de la Mora
Agustin Servin de la Mora, is the President of the Florida Institute of Interpretation and Translation. Mr. de la Mora is a Supervisor Rater in the United States for the National Center for State Courts and has been a Lead Rater for the federal and consortium oral exams. He has been the Lead Interpreter for the Ninth Judicial Circuit, is a member of the Florida Court Interpreter Certification Board and a voting member of the Technical Committee of the National Consortium for Interpreter Certification. Mr. de la Mora is a Federally Certified Court Interpreter and has been a consultant for the Administrative Offices of the State Courts in Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. He has been featured as a speaker and presenter in several national conventions.
